Austin Aries Interview by Phil Allely

Austin Aries Interview
By Phil Allely

In a few short years Austin Aries has already done it all in TNA. He has held the X Division and Team Team titles and of course raised the world Heavyweight belt.

Fame's Phil Allely caught up with A Double this past week to discuss his inclusion on the upcoming UK/Ireland tour and much more. Here are some highlights.

On the upcoming Maximum Impact tour in 2014.

'I'm really happy to be on the UK/Irish tour again. We all want to be a part of it. I'm looking forward to being out there in front of the fans and feeling their energy. They really love and appreciate what we do in the ring and the TNA product.'

'The reason the fans there embrace us so much is (I feel) because they only get to see us live once a year and are not spoiled by seeing us too often. They get to see our calibre of wrestling and feel more passionate about coming to see us.'

'That dedication and passion carries over to us in the back too. We always step it up in the ring during these tours.'

'I enjoy meeting fans and the fan interaction events are great ways for them to get up closer to us. But what I will say is that some fans need to be more respectful to us and show some more manners. It does not hurt to say please and thank you. I know that means a lot to me and I am sure the boys feel the same way.'

On World Title dreams.

'Do I want the World Title back of course I do!. I don't care who has it I'll get it from them. I've beaten Bully, Roode and countless others. I have the skill-set and drive to do it. All I need is the opportunity and shot at the belt.'

On why he has not joined a group or faction in TNA.

'You know I've never ran with the crowd. I don't subscribe to things like that. In college I never joined fraternities or gangs etc. so why start now. I do things my way and the benefit of that is that I know I can trust myself and my career is most important to me and not others.'

On morale backstage.

'There have been so many rumours about us (TNA) since the start and they never come true. People online and in many so-called 'dirt sheets' love making up stories. I think most of us just want to turn up and go to work, not have those things flying around us. This is a business and things like this (talent releases) happen. I believe things need a shake-up regularly and that leads to fresh match-ups and storylines, it is a natural part of the business.'

His favourite TNA match.

'That's a tough call, but my favourite match so far has been my ladder match against Jeff (Hardy). What I don't think people realise is that I was suffering from some serious injuries then. I had herniated discs in my back and it was for the title, so I had to work through the pain and deliver on the night. We all have to work through an injury (it's part of the business), but you know I am very proud of that match and that I was given the opportunity to carry the company for a while too.'

On possible future feuds.

'I would love to step back in the ring with Kurt Angle, when he comes back he will be a lot stronger and a match with him would be awesome. Sting is a guy I'd like to wrestle him too. I like a physical challenge and am happy to work with anyone. I see some great young talent out there as well. The likes of Garrett (Bischoff) and Wes (Brisco) get knocked a lot, but they work hard and have great potential. They are solid dudes and fans should watch out for them. I guess I am happy to work with the top guys and maybe even help the younger ones improve their game and move up the ladder.'

DVD Review: TNA – Turning Point 2012

DVD Review: TNA – Turning Point 2012

TNA's Turning Point DVD was another fine offering from the company. We have already reviewed the live PPV, but now you can own this show on DVD too.

Turning Point 2012 saw the Aces & Eights storyline picking up speed and it also presented us with a number of above par match-ups. Jeff Hardy versus Austin Aries for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship was a riveting and intense brawl. It was also fought under 'Ladder Match' rules.

Devon's battle with Kurt Angle was reasonable and of course helped move the Aces along too. Yes Kurt should be slowing down, but he can still move when he wants to. Devon still has a lot to offer TNA too.

The number 1 contender encounter (for a shot at the World Title) gave Bobby Roode, AJ Styles and James Storm the chance to hog the limelight and showcase their style, talents and adaptability.

Chavo Guerrero and Hernandez were on fine form in their match against Kazarian and Daniels. As far as Tag Team Title matches go this was well above our expectations. Chavo and Hernandez especially looked well as a unit.

Elsewhere Joseph Park took on D.O.C. Rob Van Dam defended his X Division Championship, Tara and Jessie fended off the mighty combo of ODB and Eric Young in a fun mixed tag scrap, and Samoa Joe faced his former tag team partner, with his TV belt at stake.

On the extras front we get the Before The Bell Turning Point special, music video and some post-match interviews.

TNA: Turning Point is available now. On two disc DVD.

TNA Final Resolution 2012

Hardy still champ as Ace's invade the ring.
By Phil Allely

TNA World Heavyweight Champion Jeff Hardy retained his gold in the main event of the Final Resolution PPV. However his victory celerations were short-lived as Aces and 8's beat hiom and opponent Bobby Roode down in the middle of the ring.

The event kicked off with an impromptu scrap beween Kaz and James Storm. Storm swiftly put the former tag team champ away easily with a 'last call' superkick for the popular win.

Rob Van Dam retained his X Division Title against challenger Kenny King. The action was decent here and the pair gelled well.

The TNA tag team division is swelling nicely these days. The company have perhaps the best talent in pro wrestling at present. Champs Hernandez and Chavo worked hard against foes Matt Morgan and Joey Ryan. Both teams matched styles well, however the DQ finish did leave us wanting more.

Austin Aries then beat Bully Ray in a scorcher of a match. Ray is fast-proving how valuable a player he is in the industry and the new heel Aries is a real star performer too. The end came as Brooke and Hulk Hogan got involved, allowing Aries the chance to hit a low blow on a bloody Ray for the win.

With Mickie James returning to action and Velvet Sky back on the scene the Knockouts Division may get the shot in the arm it needs now. Next up we had James face KO Champion Tara. James showed no signs of ring rust, but the outside interference from Jesse saw her title hopes dashed. Tara picking up the win.

The team of Kurt angle, Samoa Joe, Garrett Bischoff and Wes Brisco tackled the Ace's and 8s next. This was a hard-hitting affair and one that showed the mighty Aces may have a few chinks in their armour. Angle and Joe shone throughout, Angle nailing an 'angle slam' to claim victory.

AJ Styles and Daniels pulled out all the stops in what was billed as their final match. All those years of friendship and working together certainly paid off here. Unleashing every move in their arsenal the pair put on one heck of a show for the fans. Daniels pulled off the win with his take on AJ's 'styles clash'.

In the main event Hardy and Roode battled in and outside of the ring. Each trading the advantage and near-falls. The finish saw Roode get double crossed b Aces and 8s and Hardy retain his gold. The show went off the air with the masked gang beating down both men.

Final Resolution was a mixed bag of matches, when they were good they were very good, however too many run-ins/cheap finishes continue to hamper the TNA product. The aces and 8s storyline is going well and will surely lead to a big reveal soon. 2012 has been a great year for TNA, they just need to fine tune their creative team and let the talent do the work for them. Roll on January's UK/Ireland tour.

TNA Turning Point 2012 Review

TNA Turning Point 2012

by Phil Allely

Jeff Hardy retained his prized gold in the main event of TNA's Turning Point PPV and former champion James Storm saw his dreams come true as he netted a number one contenders spot for the belt.

TNA's Turning Point PPV continued the on-going storyline of the mysterious Aces & 8's members and their association with former Team 3D member Devon. We were also treated to a few key challenge matches and more, all of which gave fans the opportunity to join in the excitement of the ongoing storyline featuring the invading group.

TV Title holder Samoa Joe opened proceedings up with a successful title defence against his former pal Magnus. Brit Magnus is far better as a heel and his work against the talented pro Joe proved his worth here. After a few nice teases Joe nailed the submission win.

Although a very exceptional grappler Eric Young has seen his career lend itself towards the more comedic side of things. His partnership with ODB has made Impact Wrestling house shows an event to see. Here we were greeted by the combos of ODB/Young versus Tara/Jesse Godderz. This fun encounter ended with EY nailing a nice looking elbow drop to take the win for his team.

In a nice change of pace for a TNA PPV outside interference did not effect Rob Van Dam's successful defence of his X Division Title next. RVD and opponent Joey Ryan gave us all a fine example of how to construct a match without any interjections. Of course following Van Dam's bout winning 'five star frog splash' the champ was flattened by Ryan's associate Matt Morgan.

Ace's and 8's member Doc (a familiar shaped grappler to a former WWE one) tackled Joseph Park next in a match that needed Park to channel the aura of his brother Abyss. Park is a fun character, but he runs away from violence and Abyss does not, fans would appreciate a more violent approach to proceedings we are sure. Doc was well on form here and nailed a choke slam for the storyline efficient win.

With tag teams thin on the ground TNA's best duo (Kazarian/Daniels) faced new Tag Team Champs Hernandez and Chavo Guerrero in a reasonably paced scrap. The combo of Kaz/Daniels are well worth a viewing every time they appear. The union between big man Henandez and veteran Guerrreo have boded well here. The Mexicans pulling off the win with ease.

The TNA World Title scene took a new step when Austin won the belt. The fact that Jeff Hardy was able to wrestle the gold away from him meant that the roster were having ot be on top form to get a shot at the gold.

Next up we saw former champs AJ Styles, Bobby Roode and James Storm step in to the ring for a number one contenders match. Styles worked his socks off here, but still fell to a Storm 'superkick' the cowboy winning and netting himself a shot at the world champ.

Newly designated Sergeant at arms of the Aces and 8's Devon faced Kurt Angle in a decent match next. Angle was seeking revenge for his recent beat-down and Devon was asserting the power his associates have on TNA. As usual Angle made his opponent look a million dollars and gave Devon a fair amount of spots. Kurt did however lock in his patented ankle lock for the submission victory.

Ladder matches are a tough thing to consider (both as grappler and fan) the wrestler has to risk his body against the steel item and trust that his foe is as willing to do the same. Jeff Hardy and challenger Austin Aries are two prime examples of wrestlers who willingly give up their bodies for their art. This match was a by the book stroll through ladder match psychology and bouts of old. Hardy was back on form and Aries as always showed his true talent too, the ensuing match was a mixed bag if high-risk spots, near falls and much more.

Hardy grabbed the win by overcoming Aries to snag the belt.

TNA Turning Point 2012 was a fun outing for the company. The results may not have been ground breaking, but the results will shape the company for a while. James Storm will make a formidable world title chaser, Aries will be a great challenger and the Aces and 8's storyline seems to continue.

Jeff Hardy interview highlights

Jeff Hardy joined Dave Lagreca and Doug Mortman on Busted Open after his ladder match with Austin Aries last night. Here are some highlights from the interview.

On what he thought of the ladder match last night: "Before last night, I went back to watch some of the TLC matches and myself and the Undertaker and there is a lot for me to live up to in those matches. But I haven't seen it back because I got knocked silly numerous times. So once I see it back, I'll have a better idea of my opinion."

What is on the horizon with his contract expiring soon? "In January when that rolls around, I'll make a decision. I've pretty much made that decision. The music is going to be a huge part of it as far as keeping me around. We haven't signed anything yet, but we are getting close."

James Storm as the number one contender: "I forget where it was, but we wrestled at a live event and it wasn't too long ago, I think it was before Bound For Glory and we had a crazy good match. It's babyface vs babyface, but we have different styles, but its going to be great for sure. A lot more technical, probably throw some extreme touch in there, but you never know with James what's going to happen."

If he's still excited to be wrestling: "Of course! It is my evolution. I will ease out of wrestling and into my next step which is going to be music and maybe eventually balance both. But yeah it's just fun to have them support me like they are, even with my paintings and we're talking about this website. There is a lot of exciting things that are in the works. It's probably going to keep me around, and I'm just taking it slow. Right now I am the world champion, so I've got a lot to focus on and we keep recording new songs. It's just getting more exciting. The future has a lot to offer."

If he will change his wrestling style: "I'm going to change it big time when I leave and I come back as Willow the Wisp one of these days. My vision of this character is just an extension of myself. It will be basically from the imagination of Jeff Hardy. Willow the Wisp instead ofpainting my face, he'll just be wearing a mask. In a world that makes no sense, back in the Omega days it was so fun to be him and I never worried about making sense. I was in my own little world under that mask. At 36 years old, if I can do something like that it's going to be a blast. It's going to be a huge change of style for me."

TNA Bound For Glory 2012 Review

TNA Review - Bound For Glory 2012 By Phil Allely TNA's annual PPV Bound For Glory is an event the entire roster and loyal fan base cannot wait to be a part of. This is the companies biggest event of the year it features a weekend full of fan interaction events and guest appearances by roster members old and new. This year BFG not only promised to deliver in the ring (Ace's &8's vs Bully Ray/Sting, Roode vs Storm, Hardy vs Aries), but also paid homage to the Icon Sting with the first TNA Hall of Fame induction. After a few sub par PPV's BFG really needed to deliver. The first surprise of the night came as Rob Van Dam prised the X Division Title from the grasp of Zema Ion. RVD as champ may well open up the recently lacking Division, which was once such a highlight of TNA Programming. Former tag team partners Magnus and Samoa Joe had a pretty decent scrap for Joe's TV Title next. Both traded near falls and high impact moves. However Brit Magnus failed in his quest, falling to a Joe choke-out. Surprisingly a match the magnitude of the Storm/Roode Streetfight was relegated to third of the night. The good news was that the pair really had their work boots on here and risked life and limb to put forth one hell of a match-up. Weapons we used frequently, blood flowed and special enforcer King Mo kept his distance, allowing the former best friends to pulverise each other in and out of the ring. The match ended with Storm's hand held high and Roode lying in pool of blood and thumbtacks. This was a feud that culminated perfectly (well done TNA). The Joey Ryan/Al Snow encounter had potential, but failed to ignite the crowd. Fortunately Snow producing his mannequin head and a surprise appearance by Matt Morgan brought them back on board. Ryan capitalised the interference to earn a TNA contract. Of the three thrown together teams in the Tag Team Title match (Styles/Angle, Kazarian/Daniels) the combo of Hernandez/Chavo may have the most potential. They do that old school thing of combining strength, speed and experience. Making their team a formidable one. The match was fun and well-paced. A criticism could be that there were too many men involved to allow them to fully showcase their wares. Hernandez/Chavo pulled off the win and won the tag gold with relative ease, following a 'border toss' 'frog splash' combo move. As revealed in a exclusive interview here the pair will now be in the sights of the team of Robbie's E & T. Former friends and knockout tag champions Tara and Miss Tessmacher faced off for Tessmacher's Knockouts Title next. As women's matches go this was above par and allowed each the chance to shine. Tessmacher is definitely improving with each outing and Tara can still work with the best of them. Tara's experience however came to the fore and allowed her to snag herself one more gold belt for her collection. Highly anticipated (due to the pacing of the storyline) was the Ace's & 8's versus Sting/Bully Ray match. With numbers changing weekly the members of the gang are unknown and rumours are rife as to who they will be, when finally revealed. This was a good old fashioned brawl, no finesse at all in the moves and it suited the ageing Stinger and rough-housing Ray to perfection. Sting and Ray fared well until the numbers game got the better of them. Joseph Park ran one off, but that could only delay the inevitable loss for the TNA team. Post-match the gang attacked our valiant losers, Hulk Hogan made a (slow) save and in the final shock of the night one of the gang was revealed to be the former Team 3D member Devon. Rightly in the main event spot was the World Heavyweight Title encounter between Champ Austin Aries and the back in form Jeff Hardy. This was a match to re-view a few times as moves came thick and fast, both men chose their spots and for the main hit them perfectly. Your reviewer does wonder what a match between an in his prime Hardy and Aries would have been like. The bout flew along at a decent rate and allowed both to take risks. The ending came as a total surprise to many, Aries losing his belt to a Hardy Swanton. BFG did exceed expectations, the clips of Sting's induction were nice to see. The title changes were mostly for the greater good of the company and the first Ace's & 8's reveal did throw many smart fans. The big thing is now to see how the company capitalise on these storyline twists and just what Matt Morgan meant when he said we was there to take out the roster. TNA DVD Review: Enigma - The Best of Jeff Hardy Volume 2

TNA DVD Review: Enigma - The Best of Jeff Hardy Volume 2

By Phil Allely

Now back in favour with TNA management this is perhaps the best time to take a look at this recent double DVD set based on the most recent stint in TNA by the ever-popular Jeff Hardy.

Hardy when on form is a wonderfully entertaining and exciting grappler. This release takes us back to his early 2010 re-appearance for the company and follows his subsequent journey, through his main feud and his eagerly anticipated World Title win.

The material on offer here is very relevant and the freshness of it also means this will appeal to newer fans also. The documentary style links work well, as Hardy and many top TNA stars talk about his past indiscretions and how he made his mark once before in TNA before leaving to rejoin the WWE. Hardy himself seems very approachable here, he is honest in his answers and does acknowledge that he is very lucky to be in the position he is in TNA. This was of course before Hardy saw himself removed from active duty (and his title), this DVD timeline takes us right up to the point where TNA management and Sting had to take Hardy off TNA TV and ruin a perfectly enjoyable PPV in doing so. This event is something TNA may approach again down the line I am sure.

Alongside the talking heads and trivia points in the main feature we also get some top notch matches from 2010 TV and PPV events. The matches are all pretty decent ones, featuring Mr Anderson, Kurt Angle, Sting, Shannon Moore, Matt Morgan and a nice tag team scrap where Jeff joined his brother Matt.

Also covered here is Hardy’s heel turn and affiliation with Hulk Hogan’s Immortal faction, we are also told how Hardy’s specially designed title belt came to be and learn that he modelled his early face-painted character on his hero Sting.

Over the course of these two discs (and its five hour plus duration) we the viewer do get a warts and all look at Jeff ‘The Charismatic Enigma’ Hardy and his impact on the wrestling business. Hardy has many outside interests too, he still pursues his musical aspirations and his art, he is now a father and that seems to have curtailed(freely admitted) self-destructing lifestyle.

As Jeff Jarrett says Hardy is a one-man merchandise machine, the fans love him, they buy not only into his persona, but they buy his t-shirts etc too. This DVD is a perfect re-introduction to the present career of one of the industry’s most interesting and innovative performers.

Enigma: The Best of Jeff Hardy Volume 2 is available now from all good retailers.

Eric Bischoff talks Hardy and Flair

TNA executive producer Eric Bischoff appeared on this week’s Monday Night Mayhem radio show and was asked about the TNA statues of Jeff Hardy and Ric Flair. You can check out the full minute interview over at MondayNightMayhem.com. Here’s a recap of what Bischoff said about:

Jeff Hardy: “I have no updates on Jeff Hardy. I’m not involved in his situation within TNA. I hope the best for Jeff. He’s a very talented young man. He’s a great guy. He really is. I haven’t gotten to know him very, very well, but I believe he’s a good-hearted individual who just got caught up in some issues. From what I’ve heard, he’s dealing with them and hopefully successfully.”

Ric Flair: “Ric Flair is out with a shoulder injury. I haven’t talked to Ric in a while now, so I’m not sure what his status is. I know he’s anxious to get back. I’ve heard that through other people. This time of year is very busy for me with everything that has been going on with my family, I haven’t stayed in close contact with enough people.”

He added, “I hope to see Ric real soon. I enjoy the hell out of Ric, and respect the hell out of Ric. I love working with him. I look forward to seeing him back on Impact.”

TNA DVD Review - Genesis 2011

TNA Genesis 2011 DVD Review

By Phil Allely

Genesis was TNA’s first PPV offering of 2011 and now we can all enjoy it at home with this new DVD release version of the event. So what makes it worth purchasing?

Kicking things off Kazarian (representing Immortal & Fortune) took on fellow high flyer and risk-taker Jay Lethal in an entertaining and dangerous X Division Title scrap.

Next up the two ladies who rank high in the rejuvenated Knockouts Division Mickie James and Madison Rayne faced off for Rayne’s cherished women’s singles strap. The talented James was more than able to carry the ever-improving Rayne to a great bout.

Anytime the two best combos in the wrestling business (in this writers opinion) meet in the ring it is a special thing, throwing the TNA World Tag Team belts into the mix make that even more special. Tag Champs the Motor City Machineguns against Beer Money had so many high spots it’s hard to pick them out. Sabin/Shelley and Roode/Storm blend together so well they make pure wrestling poetry when they meet.

The most decorated tag team in wrestling (Team 3D) continued their implosion as Brothers Ray and Devon took their annoyance out on their (storyline) sibling.  The arena and ringside area became a war zone for this encounter, both not wanting to give up and unleash much pain on the other.

AJ Styles being genuinely injured led to Abyss taking his place against Television Champion Douglas Williams.

The following encounter was shaded in secrecy and suspense from the get go, former TNA Heavyweight Champion Rob Van Dam was about to face a handpicked opponent by Immortal’s Eric Bischoff. When it was stated that RVD was going to get Hardy, (of course World Champ Jeff Hardy was off the card) we thought we knew what was coming, but what we got was his brother and former WWE superstar Matt Hardy (sporting a new look). This was a wonderfully heated pairing, both men have faced each other before and both have something to prove as former champ and TNA new boy respectively.

Jeff Jarrett and the returning Kurt Angle put forth a vicious at times MMA challenge brawl next, the pair exchanging holds, moves, offensive and defensive holds. Angle even bladed to pump up the adrenaline.

The main event was designed to determine the number one contender for Jeff Hardy’s World Heavyweight Championship. Mr Anderson (fresh off his enforced concussion based sabbatical) squaring off against the hugely imposing Matt Morgan. Anderson was on fine form and showed no signs of his recent injuries.

This was also the night that Mr Anderson saw his Title dreams come true, yes there is an impromptu World Heavyweight Title match here as well.

Genesis was a superb opener in TNA’s 2011 PPV assault and one that proved that the company do have a great product and roster on hand to get it over. This DVD is an great way to remember how the company kicked off the year.

DVD Review - TNA Final Resolution 2010

DVD Review - TNA Final Resolution 2010

By Phil Allely

2010 had been a year of ups and downs with TNA, there had been many changes to the product and the behind the scenes moves and shakes have seen such people as Hulk Hogan, Eric Bischoff, RVD, Jeff Hardy and Ric Flair join the array of talent that the company has on hand.  Final Resolution was TNA’s best shot at ending the year on a high and to a degree it did just that.

Opening things of were tag teams Beer Money and Ink Inc, Storm and Roode proved once again how integral they are to the TNA product by raising the game of their opponents Moore and Neal. The in-ring action was well paced and showed both teams to their best, Neal especially displaying much improved ability and psychology than before.

With the addition of Mickie James and return of Tara to the fold the once mighty Knockouts division was back on track once more. James and Tara adding their brutal and exciting Falls Count Anywhere scrap to their spate of quality encounters.  As cat fights go this was a blinder, both ladies going all out to beat each other about the ring, ringside area and anywhere else they could.

Next up TNA newcomer Robbie E defended his X Division gold against Jay Lethal, with E’s good lady Cookie holed up in a shark cage for the duration of the match. The pair put forth a decent and involving bout, trading high spots and near falls.

Former buddies Rhino and RVD were certainly up for their First Blood match too, both unleashing a decidedly old-school ECW style battle.

The match of the night followed and in more ways than one showed that AJ Style is one of TNA’s best workers. His opponent Douglas Williams was no slouch either. The pairing moulded perfectly together to bring the audience in attendance and at home into their mini feud over Styles TNA Television Title. This was pure pleasure for fans of high risk moves, chain wrestling and hard-hitting action.

Generation Me and The Motor City Machineguns was a close second for match of the night though.  The added factor of the Tag Team gold on the line and a Full Metal Mayhem stipulation meant the fans expectations were high. Luckily both pulled out all of the stops and went through a roller coaster ride of a match that saw ladders, chairs, insane high-risk moves and some nice looking double teams.

Abyss and The Pope’s Casket match was pretty good considering Abyss’ garbage wrestling style. The pair trading the advantage and pulling the old Undertaker casket lid closing tease a few times.

Samoa Joe’s post match assault by rogue security guys Gunner and Murphy gave Jeff Jarrett a distinct advantage in their Submission match.  Jarrett held his own well against a weakened Joe, giving as good as he got, showing no mercy on Joe’s injured ankle.

The main event match between Matt Morgan and TNA Heavyweight Champion Jeff Hardy was a one sided affair at times, Morgan’s size and strength advantage leaving Hardy on the defensive a lot. The returning Mr Anderson as special referee also put Hardy’s back up too, making the match an exciting way to round off 2010.

Final Resolution was a very good effort by TNA, some of the finishes were not as popular as expected. But it did sprout forth some fine matches and the odd shock win.

TNA Final Resolution 2010 is available now form all good DVD stockists and www.tnawrestling.com

Eric Bischoff Recent Interview

TNA’s Eric Bischoff was one of the featured guests on this week’s live edition of the award-winning Monday Night Mayhem. You can listen to an MP3 of Eric Bischoff’s appearance on the show by clicking here.

Questions were taken via Eric’s official Facebook page (Facebook.com/TheEricBischoff), along with The Mayhem Line (877.666.2110).

Interview highlights courtesy of The Mayhem’s official correspondent, Paterson from New Jersey:

What Jeff Hardy could effectively give back to TNA if a return to the company facilitates itself & his reaction to the closing moments of the Victory Road Pay-Per-View:

“I’m the wrong person to ask that question of, and I shouldn’t be. I can’t understand why I feel the way I feel, therefore I certainly can’t explain it. I’m still angry at Jeff Hardy, so it’s hard for me to discuss what I think he could do or should do, because until I quit being angry at him and about the situation, whatever would come out of my mouth would probably be counterproductive.”

How the TNA return of “The Fallen Angel” Christopher Daniels came to fruition & why he was “very happy when he came back”:

“I don’t really want to go into the behind the scenes of it. I was impressed with Chris when I first came to TNA. I was surprised when he left the company, but I understand it was business. There were changes, and decisions, and moves that had to be made, but I also knew that everyone in TNA fully expected to have Chris back at some point. I was very happy when he came back. He’s a good athlete, he’s a good character, and I’m interested to see how that character evolves as the weeks & months go by.”

His opinion of the wrestling promotion that used the Scott Hall incident from last weekend to promote their Internet Pay-Per-View:

“I’m not gonna judge them. I wasn’t there, I don’t know what led up to it, I don’t know what kind of shape Scott was in before he went out. Was he stumbling around backstage for 2 to 3 hours? Was it obvious that he was in that shape? Did he show up two minutes before he had to go out and they had to scramble? I don’t know because I wasn’t there. I’m not going to pass judgment on them for letting him go out. I came across the video, and my wife & I watched it together, and it was very sad. I wasn’t angry at the promoters for showing it & recording it. I was just sad for Scott.”

His reaction to the WWE’s decision to re-brand its company, eliminating the word “wrestling” from its name:

“I think it’s kind of odd to be honest with you. I understand from a marketing point of view the pressure that he’s under. Professional wrestling is & has always been a tough sell in the advertising community & mainstream television community, simply because it doesn’t fit into a particular niche. That’s always been a challenge in our industry, but at the same time, it’s the thing that makes us unique, and it’s the one thing that makes wrestling fans as loyal as they are. To knowing alienate or turn your back to such a large passionate group of fans, I understand it but I don’t necessarily agree with that. Time will tell if Vince made a right decision or if this will be another XFL moment.”

TNA Victory Road 2011 PPV Review

Tna-Against All Odds/Victory Road 2011Victory Road proves bumpy for TNA!

TNA’s Victory Road card had great potential, recent editions of Impact! were very well received and the 2011 pay-per-view output to date has been too, so perhaps we should not let one poor main event ruin a good thing? The PPV itself was forged around Sting’s return and shock world heavyweight title win over Hulk Hogan‘s Immortal brand, his much-hyped re-match with Jeff Hardy being the expected highlight of a card that was designed to build things up for the upcoming usually feud-ending Lockdown PPV. Unfortunately things went a bit awry and Sting ended up squashing Hardy in a main event match that lasted mere seconds.

The preceding bouts fared far better though and served their purpose well.

Kicking things off Tommy Dreamer faced Bully Ray in an enjoyable ECW style No DQ/Falls Count Anywhere brawl that featured comic spots, weapons, an inflatable doll and a Devon run-in to give Dreamer the win.

Unlikely champs Angelina Love and Winter then lost their TNA Knockouts Tag Team Belts to the feisty duo of Sarita and Rosita in a decent Knockouts outing.

Matt Morgan and Hernandez went down the ‘first blood’ route next with a fast, furious and vicious at times, brawl, that ending confusingly as a mystery man ran in for the ref bump and gave Supermex the opportunity to coat Morgan in fake blood and gain the win.

The X Division then took things high octane with the Ultimate X four man match between Generation ME, Robbie E and champ Kazarian, the mix of career shortening moves, risk-taking action and even a tease of a Buck brothers break-up all kept this flowing, Kaz though justified his spot as champ by retaining his title for Fortune.

Fortune’s Beer Money defended their tag team straps in a reasonable match with challengers Ink Inc. Jesse Neal and Shannon Moore tried their utmost to keep up with TNA’s finest tandem, but they fell short, a DUI on Moore keeping the gold in the Fortune camp for a while anyway.

AJ Styles faced Matt Hardy in a Fortune/Immortal bout that saw Ric Flair join in the action. Styles was as impressive as ever and Hardy showed signs of his old self. Styles taking the win with a little help from referee Earl Hebner.

The Penultimate bout saw Rob Van Dam tackle Mr Anderson and saw both go though their trademark moves, strut their stuff and enthusiastically vie for the no 1 contenders spot. The crowd were hot for this one and yet even after so many close calls the match ended as a (unpopular result of a) double count out.

Which of course made the main event all the poorer for it duration and content (Eric Bischoff had more ring time than Jeff Hardy), TNA are now in full on damage limitation mode, US fans have been offered great incentives for supporting Victory Road and UK fans have been privy to some unique fan interaction events, here’s hoping Lockdown gets them back on track and resumes normal service for the organisation

Sting's Impact! return review

Hulk’s Immortal TNA Takeover has a Sting in the tail!

By Phil Allely

After months of internet rumblings and rumours about his jump elsewhere, former multiple time TNA Heavyweight Champion and WCW legend Sting finally returned to TV this week and instantly made an Impact!. The rejuvenated Stinger winning the world title from Immortal’s Jeff Hardy in a surprisingly enjoyable main event of the flagship show.

Elsewhere on the highly hyped card Hulk Hogan returned from his recent back surgery to face off against TNA President Dixie Carter (revealing he had won their court case and was now in charge of TNA). The segment saw Immortal and Fortune have a verbal battle, Flair’s former charges making the save to rescue Dixie from Hulk and Co’s clutches.

Beer Money defended their Tag Team belts against Gunner and Murphy in a fast and furious bout, the ever sharp combo of Roode and Storm got the win though. Ink Inc. then challenged them for a match at Victory Road.

Jersey Shore star Angelina, joined Robbie E and Cookie to interrupt The Beautiful People’s celebration of Velvet Sky’s win over Sarita. The sequence ending in a cat fight to build up a new feud.

Jeff and Karen Jarrett’s wedding vow renewal (parts 1 & 2) degenerated into a fun brawl that saw Karen end up face deep in her own wedding cake courtesy of her former husband Kurt Angle and an oddly amusing/vomit inducing series of love, which was rounded off by an axe wielding psychotic faced Kurt Angle taking some flak from a New York Jet member.

Rob Terry battled Scot Steiner in a muscleman scrap, Steiner continuing his impressive ways by overcoming the younger mans onslaught with brute strength for the win.

Supermex Hernandez and former tag partner Matt Morgan pummelled each other in a bloody no contest revenge match and kept their war alive until perhaps a cage match beckons.

Stings re-signing with TNA puts rumours of him either facing Undertaker at Wrestlemania or entering the Hall of Fame to bed for now at least. As one of the few still in-ring active members of wrestling’s veteran elite the invigorated Steve Borden as TNA champ is a major factor in the ongoing war with WWE. With the Hulkster and his Immortal brand being rocked by Sting, Fortune and a resilient Dixie Carter, perhaps TNA’s lead into next weeks Victory Road PPV was so perfectly planned even (much berated) head writer Vince Russo needs commended for it.

TNA Bound For Glory 2010 DVD Review

TNA Bound For Glory 2010 DVD Review

By Phil Allely

TNA’s flagship pay-per-view Bound For Glory had to pull off an awful lot to please its loyal fans, the event promised a new world champion, RVD’s revenge bout with Abyss, Mickie James first PPV appearance, the EV 2 and Fortune feud was to culminate in Lethal Lockdown and after some teases Abyss would finally reveal who ‘They’ were, so did 10/10/10 ultimately fulfil its obligations? This newly released double DVD set helps make sure it does.

Opening things with a bang were Generation Me who took on the Motor City Machineguns for the Guns World Tag Team Belts. Shelley and Sabin proved once again just how slick a unit they are, systematically picking apart their younger rivals.

New signing Mickie James featured in the TNA Knockouts Title match, holding the action together well in her role as special referee.

The four-way battle saw Knockouts champion Angelina Love defend against, her Beautiful People partner Velvet Sky, returnee Tara and Madison Rayne.

Oddball team Orlando Jordan and Eric Young were up next battling the colourful duo Ink Inc. Jesse Neal and Shannon Moore were on form throughout. Their bizarre opponents were fun, but a tad too off kilter for many in attendance, Young’s comic turns however were spot on.

The UK’s own Douglas Williams represented Fortune in his quest to recapture the X Division Title, current champion Jay Lethal of course had other ideas. Both men used their particular talents to their own ends, Williams utilising his mat based style, whilst Lethal tried his best to fly and use his speed.

Rob Van Dam then finally got his hands on Abyss, seeking revenge for the brutal and bloody beat down that saw him lose his beloved heavyweight championship. The best place to do this was of course a Monster’s Ball match, where weapons are welcome and rules don’t exist.

Handicap rules were to the fore as Samoa Joe and Jeff Jarrett faced off against the trio of Kevin Nash, Sting and The Pope. With some bitter attitudes on hand, the teams recent war of words became a stiff reality.

Team 3D then made a special appearance to announce their retirement, the 23 time former tag team champs asked for one more match with the Motor City Machineguns before hanging up their boots.

Lethal Lockdown was everything it should be, a full throttle cage match where all hell breaks loose and the opposing teams finally get the chance to work through their differences with the cage and weapons as added extras. Mick Foley and Ric Flair had a brief ringside brawl before the EV 2/Fortune team stepped inside, Fortune having the man advantage throughout the first portion of the ten man event.

Flair’s foot soldiers took control from the outset, having a fired up Foley, Flair and the remaining team members at ringside helped keep the crowd pumped up as well. EV 2 however quickly clawed back some leverage of their own with each fresh man who entered, the extreme team proving to be better at handling the brutal setting.

The main event promised a new TNA World Heavyweight Champion and the trio participating all seemed equally likely candidates. Kurt Angle said he’d quit if he was beat, Mr Anderson was the star on the rise out to prove a point and Jeff Hardy was atop a short list of men who deserve a long world title run, if they can keep their noses clean.

The finish was a shock for many reasons, after the many near falls, moonsaults, Angle Slams, swanton’s, mic check’s and obligatory ref bump, the title went to the unpredictable Hardy, but he had a bit of help.

Prior to his win Eric Bischoff and an on-crutches Hulk Hogan appeared and in a major swerve turn Jeff turned heel to join them, blasting both opponents with the walking aids, to gain an easy pin.

The crowd were obviously stunned, as we saw a newly heel Hardy deck an enquiring RVD, he joined a smiling Hogan, Bischoff, Abyss and Jarrett, subsequently revealing them to be the mysterious ‘They’ as the PPV went off the air.

Bound for Glory was perhaps TNA’s best offering of 2010, a new champion was crowned, we finally saw EV 2’s veterans beat Ric Flair’s young guns Fortune, the under card held its own amongst the bigger tales unfolding, RVD got his vengeance on Abyss, plus we finally saw who the much hyped ‘They’ were.

The second disc here adds to the value of the package greatly, BFG was a fine example of how to do a PPV right but the extras go above and beyond the call of duty and help enhance an already purchase worthy item. There is a nice documentary style feature on the event, interviews, fan interaction footage and photo galleries to peruse at your leisure.

TNA Against All Odds 2011

Hardy beats the odds and Knockouts Challenge a blackout!

By Phil Allely

TNA’s first PPV event on its new UK channel Challenge proved to be the night that not only the company finally came home (even with a slight technical hitch), but the one where former World Heavyweight Champion Jeff Hardy would regain his gold from Mr Anderson in the main event. The main event was an exciting and entertaining one, but it wasn’t the only highpoint in this event, that came hot on the heels of TNA’s best received UK tour to date.

Elsewhere on the card Robbie E claimed his spot as number one contender to Kazarian’s X Division Title after Generation Me were stranded due to travel issues. Fortunately the champ decided he would defend his belt anyway and he took Robbie to one of his best outings to date. Even with Cookie’s interference the Fortune member had the upper hand and retained with a good looking inverted tombstone piledriver.

Next up the boozed up trio of Scott Steiner and TNA Tag Team Champions Beer Money took on the team of Rob Terry, Gunner and Murphy. AJ Styles on colour commentary and the presence of Fortune’s ring masters Roode and Storm all helped ensure the lesser in-ring experienced Immortal members looked decent throughout. Steiner’s first match back in TNA went well too, with him nailing an impressive Frankensteiner for the win.

The ongoing Pope and Samoa Joe feud continued next, with both men trading the offensive and Joe’s cameraman Okado stopping Pope‘s hasty escape early on, Joe eventually took the advantage and struck with a ‘rear naked choke’ to gain the submission win. The cocky Pope’s post-match assault leaving Joe bloody and furious, this personal battle is one that will continue it seems.

In a bout missing from the UK broadcast due to a technical fault (which saw Challenge lose it‘s feed for a short time) TNA Knockouts Champion Madison Rayne faced Mickie James in a Last Knockout Standing brawl. Holding nothing back the pair battled around the ringside area and both went for it with gusto. James saw her title aspirations slip away once again after Rayne’s partner in crime Tara and the ever present loaded glove became involved in proceedings. Rayne nailed a brass knuckles shot to put James down for the ten count and end this chapter of their bitter war for the gold.

Hernandez and Matt Morgan took to the mic next, Supermex’s new pro-Mexican stance, heel status and anti-white stance had the crowd riled up and Morgan in pain with ease.

The RVD versus Matt Hardy scrap that followed was every bit as involving as their previous encounters and the pair were able to bring new depth and creativity to it as well. The back and forth action saw both unleash their trademark moves, neither holding back and Van Dam being fortunate enough to dodge a Hardy moonsault attempt and hit his ‘Five Star’ Frog Splash finisher to put Matt down for the three count.

Former tag team greats Team 3D’s separation has become increasingly violent and with Devon’s sons now involved it got worse. The former team mates Street Fight saw Ray take great delight in punishing his former set up the ‘what’s up’ head butt, Ray’s nasty side soon took over and he nailed Devon with a chair, decked his sons and handcuffed Devon to the ring, he won the match with ease and still decided to brutally put one of the boys through a table for good measure.

Kurt Angle’s very sanity was on the line in the penultimate match-up, he was placing the custody of his own children up against his walking ex wife Karen up the aisle for her wedding vow renewal with current husband Jeff Jarrett. Karen’s involvement, referee distractions/bumps and a lot of emotion played a big part in this one. The back and forth action saw numerous near falls, nice set-pieces and some great moves, Kurt however failed in his quest and lost the match and a chance at custody of his kids. As Jarrett gloated and vacated the ring a despairing Angle removed his boots and (in a move reminiscent of an amateur grappler retiring) he left them in the ring.

The main event for the TNA World Championship was everything it was expected to be, a violent, high-spot heavy ladder-based match up that saw challenger Jeff Hardy in his element and any limitations between him and his opponent become lost amongst the in-ring spectacle. Hardy after a few attempts was successful in regaining his grandiose gold belt and once again hold the title for his faction Immortal.

Against All Odds was a very good effort by TNA, it may have had a few moments where things could have been smoother and better produced, but overall the hits far outweighed the misses. With Jeff Hardy as new champ the chase is once again on to wrestle the gold away from Immortal’s clutches. The returning Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair may have a big part in who does that and where it happens. With a new home on UK TV and some heated re-matches and feuds in the works 2011 just got hotter for TNA.
