TNA Live Review: One Night Only - Knockouts Knockdown
TNA Live Review: One Night Only - Knockouts Knockdown
TNA's latest One Night Only PPV event was an all Knockout division affair and saw the return of some old faces, new talent and a final glimpse of some recently departed ones as well.
The concept was that the wining participants throughout the night's matches would progress to a 'gauntlet' style encounter, here they would battle it out for the title of 'Queen of TNA'.
Throughout the night we got to see some of the best highlights from the KO divisions glory days (when their matches often stole the show and proved to be real ratings winners) and recent high points too.
The returning Alissa Flash kicked things off against Gail Kim in a very decent opening scrap. The Shimmer Champion (better known as Cheerleader Melissa) fared well against Kim and put forth some great offence. Gail won with a 'eat defeat' to progress to the gauntlet main event.
Gut Check participants Lei'D Tapa and Ivelisse Velez had a hard act to follow and couldn't really pull it off unfortunately. Tapa won the short encounter with a slam.
The much-missed Tara was up next against Mia Yim. Yim worked hard here, but was never really allowed to shine. Veteran Tara nailed a 'widows peak' to advance after a spot of interference from her beau Jesse.
Miss Tessmacher may now be aligned with Aces & 8's, but here she was still an active KO roster member. Her opponent Santana Garrett tired her best, but lost this short TV style bout without impressing too much.
Trinity was a member of the division in its formative years and looked well for her age (42). The match against ODB was not as good looking though, ODB won with relative ease.
Veteran grappler Jackie Moore (TNA, USWA, WCW, WWE) faced off against newcomer Taryn Terrell put together a well-paced match next. Moore carrying the talented Terrell to a match that was an improvement over some that preceded it. Moore nailed the win after a dropkick.
British Bootcamp star Hannah Blossom showcased her talent well in a fast-paced three-way encounter next. Here she overcame the might of Sojo Bolt and Taeler Hendrix. This would ave been so much better with a few more minutes of time given to it.
The following battle really didn't impress I am afraid to say. Velvet Sky and former WWE star Jillian Hall could not gel and the match seemed to drag an awful lot. Sky's quick win was a godsend here.
Things picked up next as Mickie James stood toe-to-toe with the returning Serena Deeb. Here we had a crisp, well-paced and highly physical match, that perfectly highlighted what the KO division can achieve when talent is used correctly. The pair offered up a blistering series of exchanges before James pulled off the win.
The 'gauntlet' finale was a typical over-the-top affair, where the action slowed at times when too many bodies were in the ring. The start worked well and the finale between James and Kim worked very well indeed. Kim faked an injury to get a sneaky roll-up pin on James to be crowned 'Queen of TNA'.
Knockouts Knockdown was a PPV that promised so much, considering the talented female roster that are currently available (in TNA and on the indy scene). However the shortness of the matches and some sloppy efforts made it an event that felt more like a series of TV filler scraps. It was nice to see some old faces return to the fold and to see what may be the last in-ring appearances by Madison Rayne, Tara and Brooke Hogan as well. The One Night Only events suffer from being pre-recorded many months before transmission, but otherwise they are a welcome addition to TNA programming.

Katarina 'Winter' Waters Interview Highlights
Former WWE Diva and TNA Women's Knockouts Champion Katarina Waters (a/k/a Katie Lea Burchill and Winter) joined Kayfabe Wrestling Radio this week to discuss her time in Ohio Valley Wrestling and learning the WWE style of wrestling, the incest angle with Paul Burchill, her WrestleMania experiences and more. Highlights from the interview are as follows:
If her early background in drama and theater helped her developing a character for wrestling: "Yeah, I would say it helped, especially the improvisational part helped, because there's just so many times when you're just thrown out there and given just a general note of what you're supposed to be saying; you know, what your bullet points are and you're supposed to create a whole conversation around it and make it interesting and varied and in turn with the character that you're trying to portray. Especially the improvisation then helps; just that you have experience and that it's not regular bunny-in-the-headlights 'Oh God, what am I going to say next', but that it's something that you're used to and feel more confident doing that. So, I'd say that especially helps. And then with the character building, I guess a lot of wresting is being able to portray a character that you sort of secretly want to be, a lot of the time; not always, obviously. But if you really get to pick and choose who you can be, you know, the evil "B" that you never get to be in real life; maybe you grew up being very nice and polite to everybody, at least you get to scream and shout and swear and be this horrible being. Yeah, it's fun."
On her days in OVW and learning the "WWE Style": "Al Snow was in charge of us (OVW Divas), and I think that Al Snow is one of the people I've learned more from than anybody else. He's such a great teacher and really the WWE style made a lot of sense, especially the way he was able to explain it because it's all about the story; storytelling in the ring and the dramatics and the story between the two people that will keep you watching rather than just some moves, one next to the other. So, in that sense, I was really grateful to be able to learn that and understand that and I'm still grateful now when I go to do shows, that I have that knowledge, that I got in OVW; that I have that in the back of my mind that I can use. It was just a really great learning experience, especially because Al and Danny Davis were writing the TV show. So, you were able to go to Al with ideas for storylines and for your character and he would help you put together something that, if what you suggested didn't work, he would explain why and what to change, but he would always take your ideas on board so that you could learn from your own creativity and be creative. It was a really awesome experience."
Her character in WWE and the possible 'incest' angle with Paul Burchill: "I thought it was going to be a wonderful idea. I mean, I knew it could eventually end up disastrous but it could also be amazing. I mean, who is not interested in that? Any time the mainland TV show has run some kind of incest angle, it's been the most talked about thing. I don't know if you guys do that over here; in England, we've had a few of those going on. I thought it was alright to refer to the film 'The Crow' where you have Top Dollar, the bad guy, and his sister or half-sister have some kind of thing going on there between them. I just figured it would be something like that where it's kind of implied by not right there; maybe a tease and maybe it would come out a bit more or maybe it was just an unspoken kind of thing. But wither way, I really felt it was something intriguing and that people would be fascinated by and would want to watch. I was all for it.
What the Wrestlemania experience was like for her, for both events she was at: "Well, the thing is for me, growing up Wrestlemania didn't stand out amongst the other PPVs. To me, Royal Rumble, Survivor Series, Wrestlemania, King of the Ring; I really didn't understand, really, the difference. Like I didn't see Wrestlemania as being the uber-supershow, because I wasn't that plugged into it; I was just watching on TV, you know, in Germany. So for me, any PPV they had then, not right now where they have one every month, but back then when it was the 4 or 5 big ones, that was (PPVs) a big deal, in general. In hindsight obviously it's 'Wow, I was at Wrestlemania" so that's awesome. But Wrestlemania didn't stand out for me as a bigger PPV that the others. But that being said, it's still something I can say "I was at TWO Wrestlemanias"; that's pretty savvy."
Who truly came up with her Winter gimmick in TNA; herself or Vince Russo?: "I think that's a difficult question to answer because he basically came up with the thing, the story and that, and he would tell you pretty much what to say and then you also have to, as an actress or a performer, change around little pieces and you have to make your own, but I'd have to say Vince essentially came up with it and I changed it out; you know how you have those coloring books, Vince was the one who gave me the coloring book, and hopefully, maybe, I put the right colors into it."
In this 50-minute interview, Waters also discusses if she was more comfortable growing up German or British, who made the decision for her to be promoted to the main WWE roster, social media's place in wrestling, the infamous ‘future endeavored’ speech from WWE, being an action figure, WWE's marketing of women's wrestling, leaving TNA Wrestling, her future and more. The interview is available at WildTalkRadio.com.

Mickie James Interview Highlights
Mickie James participated in an interview with Female First while she was in the UK promoting TNA Wrestling’s upcoming Maximum Impact Tour and recalled her reaction to being released from her WWE contract last year. She admitted it was as big a shock for her, and did upset her.
“I think it angered a lot of people,” she says, continuing: “It would be one thing if I was doing a poor job, and I didn’t capture the fans every time I went out there, or if I wasn’t so good at what I did.”
As it was, it drained her of her passion for wrestling, until one show in a high school gym.
“I looked around the locker room, looking in these peoples’ eyes. There were people who had never been anywhere, never wrestled anywhere except here. You could see that fire in their eyes, that desire and that wanting to make it. I thought…s***, what happened to that?”
She adds: “It was one of those wonderful eye-opening things. I do this because I love it, I love entertaining the fans. I love what I do out there, and I’m amazing at it.”
This led her to TNA, with the organization acquiring another wrestler who gained notoriety in WWE. Whilst TNA sometimes comes under fire for pushing homegrown talent aside in favour of former WWE talent, she thinks it’s important to keep it fresh.
“You can’t do the same things over and over again. We have so much talent, there are ways to keep it fresh,” she explains, before pointing out that AJ Styles and Samoa Joe are still featured regularly on television.
She then adds that if people wanted to watch the same thing over and over again, they would tune into WWE.
“TNA really started to make a name for themselves with the X Division, stuff like that, because it was different, nobody else was doing it,” she says.
According to the article, the industry has it’s detractors, both in the wrestling press and with sceptics. James has a less-than-favorable opinion on the subject of “the poor end of the wrestling press” (referred to as “dirt sheets”):
She points out that “nobody reads those things”, adding: “I feel like, nine times out of ten, it’s somebody who thinks they know, but really they don’t.”
The industry also faces criticism from those who disregard what the wrestlers do as fake. James says, “We’ll never try to pull the wool over anybody’s eyes and say there’s not a certain artwork to it. I guarantee you, 9 out of 10 people in the world wouldn’t step in the ring and do what I do, nor could they. I think we have one of the hardest jobs in the world.”

TNA No Surrender 2012 - PPV Review
Mickie Surrender’s her gold as Sting eyes up a clash with Hogan…
By Phil Allely
TNA’s No Surrender Pay-Per-View was a slightly hit and miss affair content wise, but it did see two title changes, a surprise bout crowning the BFG Series winner and one match was confirmed for the Upcoming Bound For Glory supershow, alongside some hints at other ones. A technical issue did hamper UK viewers enjoyment though.
Things opened up reasonably well as new boy to the X Division Jesse Sorensen battled cagey veteran Kid Kash for the number one contender’s spot for the X title. Underdog Sorensen pulled off the shock win after a lengthy beat down from Kash.
James Storm and Bully Ray’s BFG Series encounter was a slow plodding affair, the stalling by Ray and dodgy DQ finish didn’t help matters. Ray’s win giving him a clear lead over his nearest rivals Robert Roode and Gunner.
The Winter versus Mickie James match for the Knockouts title saw a Wonder Woman clad James having to fend off not only the unconventional Winter but also the interfering Angelina Love. The numbers game and a Great Muta style mist spray to the face saw Winter once again raise the gold.
Mexican America successfully defended their newly won Tag Team straps in an average scrap with the combo of Brother Devon and The Pope. Sarita and Rosita proving to be the deciding factor, their interference giving their team the win.
Samoa Joe showed signs of his former glories in his outing with Matt Morgan, both big men offering forth a series of hard-hitting moves and solid in-ring action. Morgan however came out the better after a successful Carbon Footprint found its mark.
Needing a submission win to tie with Bully Ray Bobby Roode and Gunner pulled out all of the stops in their war. Roode’s working of a weakened arm on Gunner finally paying off as the Immortal member tapped out to the Fortune representative.
Austin Aries faced fellow high flyer Brian Kendrick in an X Division Championship match. Aries’ tenacity proving fruitful, a brutal brainbuster move finishing off Kendrick’s title run.
The un-advertised BFG final between Roode and Ray started slow with plenty of stalling, but quickly got tough. After trading the advantage and teasing near falls it was Roode who capitalised on a missed move by ray to get his shot at the World Heavyweight Champ at Bound For Glory.
Unfortunately the main event remained unseen by UK fans (due to a technical issue), but what we missed was World Champ Kurt Angle, Mr Anderson and Sting taking each other to the limit in a nicely paced triple threat match for the gold. There were near falls, Angle as always went all out to impress, Sting continued to revisit his enthusiastic old self and Anderson held up his side of things too. The end came as Hulk Hogan interfered (once again) on Angle’s behalf and Sting fell to an opportunist pin fall.
No Surrender may have had a few too many interference based results, but it did give us a couple of new champions amongst other things. Elsewhere we saw the impending Hulkster/Sting bout gather steam, Bobby Roode saw his world title dreams come build too. The biggest downside being the technical issue that left Challenge viewers without the main event.

Mickie James Interview Highlights
TNA Women’s Knockout Champion Mickie James was asked on her official website if she would ever return to WWE.
“This is a tough question that I often get asked and usually avoid answering. I can’t say that I never will or would go back to the WWE.” James said.
“I honestly never intended on leaving until I retired. However we don’t choose our destiny. We just live it. I am very happy at TNA and am enjoying my time here for as long as it lasts. I’ve had a lot of opportunities to grow inside and out as a performer, artist, and a woman. One really never knows what tomorrow holds. That’s why you make the most of every moment. Good, bad, or indifferent, and own it like only you can.”
She also gave her thoughts on the WWE Hall of Fame, writing: “To be inducted in to the Hall of Fame is a huge honor for any one person in this industry. It not only gives you credibility as the mark you made in the pages of history to the fans, but notoriety for the path you paved for everyone who followed in your footsteps.”
– Madison Rayne indicated on her Twitter account that her husband, who serves for the United States military, was recently sent overseas. The multi-time TNA Women’s Champion tied the knot last February and changed her name to Ashley Cabot.

Mickie James Interview HIghlights
Mickie James spoke with Ledger-Enquirer.com to promote TNA Wrestling’s live event yesterday in Columbus, Georgia. Highlights from the interview are as follows:
The challenges a woman faces in the male-dominated world of professional wrestling: “As a woman I want to prove myself even more. I might not be as tough as the guys but sometimes I have the match of the night. Then the guys have to go out and top me. It’s still such a male-dominated sport that we’re not taken seriously. We still have lingerie matches and pillow fights. It’s a real task. But most of the fans know who I am.”
Injuries she has endured throughout her career: “I haven’t had a ton of injuries. I had a MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) infection in my knee. I had to get it drained and removed. My knee (was swollen) up to the size of my thigh. I was stubborn. I told everyone I’ve wrestled with worse than this. But I flew home and got it checked. The doctor told me if I had waited it could have been a lot worse. I’ve had stitches in my eye, lost a tooth, I’ve separated both shoulders twice and I’ve had a few concussions.”
Stacy Keibler: She’s hot stuff. I heard she dated George Clooney for a minute. I’m so jealous. That’s awesome. She’s really branched out and done things as a female that the Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin have done.
“But she’s never really been a wrestler. She’s done lingerie and pillow fight matches.”
What would surprise fans about herself: “I try to keep the sanctuary of the storylines. That means I travel by myself. I’ve found that the people I have the most connections with are the ones I work best on opposite sides. We have the passion for wrestling and we want the same thing. You say you’re sorry later.”
